Jesus – Who is He?

Every person throughout history can be described by personal traits, accomplishments, and relationships. There was, however, only One Person in history with both human and divine characteristics. This person is Jesus the Christ (Messiah), the most well-known person in history yet, paradoxically, the most incomprehensible.

The many and varied characteristics of Jesus are provided below in two alphabetical lists. The first list is comprised of a word or short description used in Scripture to describe Jesus. The second list links the descriptions in the first list with associated verse references.

Advocate – 1 John 2:1, My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Alpha and Omega – Revelation 22:13, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
Amen – Revelation 3:14, To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of

the creation of God says this

Anointed – John 1:41, He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ).

Apostle – Hebrews 3:1, Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession

Arm of the Lord – John 12:37-38, But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? AND TO WHOM HAS THE ARM OF THE LORD BEEN REVEALED?”

Author and Perfecter of our faith – Hebrews 12:2, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Author of salvation – Hebrews 2:10, For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.

Beloved – Ephesians 1:6, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Branch – Jeremiah 23:5, “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch;

And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land.”

Bread of life – John 6:35, Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.”

Bridegroom – Mark 2:20, But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.

Bright Morning Star – Revelation 22:16, “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

Carpenter – Mark 6:3, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him.

Carpenter’s son – Matthew 13:55, “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?”

Chief Shepherd – 1 Peter 5:4, And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Chief Cornerstone – Acts 4:11, He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE

CHIEF CORNER stone.

Christ (Messiah) – John 1:41, He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ).

Christ Jesus our Lord – Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Christ of God – Luke 9:20, And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Christ of

God.”

Christ, the Power of God and the Wisdom of God – 1 Corinthians 1:24, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Christ, the Son of God – John 20:31, but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

Christ, Son of the Blessed One – Mark 14:61, But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”

Consolation of Israel – Luke 2:25, And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

Cornerstone – Ephesians 2:20, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone.

Deliverer – Romans 11:26, and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, “THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.”

Descendant of David – 2 Timothy 2:8, Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel,

Door – John 10:9, “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” Emmanuel – Matthew 1:23, “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL

CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

Eternal Life – 1 John 5:20, And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

Faithful and True – Revelation 19:11, And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

Faithful Witness – Revelation 1:5, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood

Faithful and True Witness – Revelation 3:14, To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this

First and last – Revelation 2:8, And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life says this

Firstborn from the dead – Colossians 1:18, He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

Firstborn of all creation – Colossians 1:15, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

Foundation – 1 Corinthians 3:11, For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Forerunner – Hebrews 6:20, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Friend of tax collectors and sinners – Matthew 11:19, “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

God (deity) – Hebrews 1:8, But of the Son He says, “YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.

God blessed forever – Romans 9:5, whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

God with us – Matthew 1:23, “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

Good Shepherd – John 10:11, I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Great God and Savior – Titus 2:13-14, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

Great Shepherd of the sheep – Hebrews 13:20, Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant.

Guarantee of better covenant – Hebrews 7:22, so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant Head of every man – 1 Corinthians 11:3, But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the

head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.

Head of the body, the church – Colossians 1:18, He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

Heir of all things – Hebrews 1:2, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

High priest – Hebrews 3:1, Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession

Holy and Righteous One – Acts 3:14, But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you.

Holy one of God – John 6:69, “We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
Holy servant – Acts 4:30, while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy

servant Jesus

Horn of salvation – Luke 1:69, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David His servant

I AM – John 8:58, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

Image of God – Colossians 1:15, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

Indescribable Gift – 2 Corinthians 9:15, Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

Jesus of Nazareth – John 1:45, Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote–Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Jesus, the Son of Joseph – John 6:42, They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”

Judge (of living and dead) – Acts 10:42, And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.

King of Israel – John 1:49, Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”
King of Kings – Revelation 17:14, These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord

of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.

King of the Jews – Matthew 2:2, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”

Lamb – Revelation 7:17, for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes.

Lamb of God – John 1:36, and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

Leader – Matthew 23:10, Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.

Life – Colossians 3:4, When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

Light – John 12:46, “I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.”

Light of the world – John 8:12, Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

Light to the Gentiles – Luke 2:32, A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, and the glory of Your people Israel.

Living Bread – John 6:51, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

Living Stone – 1 Peter 2:4, And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God.

Lion of the tribe of Judah – Revelation 5:5, and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”

Lord God Almighty – Revelation 11:17, saying, “We give You thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to reign.”

Lord Jesus Christ – Philippians 3:20, For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ

Lord of glory – 1 Corinthians 2:8, the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Lord of Lords – Revelation 17:14, These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.

Lord of the dead and of the living – Romans 14:9, For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

Lord of the Sabbath – Matthew12:8, For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.
Lord our righteousness – Jeremiah 23:6, In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by

which He will be called, “The LORD our righteousness.”

Lord over all – Romans 10:12, For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him.

Man Christ Jesus – 1 Timothy 2:5, For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Man of sorrows – Isaiah 53:3, He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one

from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Master – Luke 17:13, and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
Mediator – 1 Timothy 2:5, For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Messenger of the covenant – Malachi 3:1, “Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts.

Messiah the Prince – Daniel 9:25, So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.

Mighty God – Isaiah 9:6, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Minister in the sanctuary – Hebrews 8:1-2, Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.

Only begotten (one and only, unique) – John 1:18, No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

Our Hope – 1 Timothy 1:1, Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope.

Our Passover – 1 Corinthians 5:7, Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.

Our Savior – Titus 1:4, To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Overseer (Guardian) – 1 Peter 2:25, For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

Physician – Luke 4:23, And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ”

Power of God – 1 Corinthians 1:24, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Precious Cornerstone – 1 Peter 2:6, For this is contained in Scripture: “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

Priest – Hebrews 7:21, for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, “THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, ‘YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER.’ ”

Prince – Acts 5:31, He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

Prince of Life – Acts 3:15, but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.

Prince of Peace – Isaiah 9:6, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Prophet – John 6:14, Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Propitiation (our Sin-offering) – 1 John 2:2, and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

Rabbi – Mark 9:5, Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

Redemption – 1 Corinthians 1:30, But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption

Resurrection and the Life – John 11:25, Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies.”

Righteous Branch – Jeremiah 23:5, “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land.”

Righteous Judge – 2 Timothy 4:8, in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

Righteous One – Acts 7:52, Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

Righteous One, My Servant – Isaiah 53:11, As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.

Righteousness – 1 Corinthians 1:30, But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.

Rock – 1 Corinthians 10:4, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.

Rock of Offense – Romans 9:33, just as it is written, “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

Ruler – Matthew 2:6, AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.

Ruler in Israel – Micah 5:2, But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.

Ruler of the kings of the earth – Revelation 1:5, … Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood

Sanctification – 1 Corinthians 1:30, But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.

Savior of the world – 1 John 4:14, We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

Second man – 1 Corinthians 15:47, The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven.

Servant – Acts 3:13, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.

Shepherd – Matthew 26:31Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.’ ”

Shepherd and Guardian of souls – 1 Peter 2:25, For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

Shiloh – Genesis 49:10, The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

Signal – Isaiah 11:10, Then in that day the nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; and His resting place will be glorious.

Son of the Father – 2 John 1:3, Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

Son of David – Matthew 20:30-31, And two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd sternly told them to be quiet, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

Son of God – John 1:34, I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.
Son of Man – John 8:28, So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on

My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.”

Son of the Most High – Luke 1:32, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

Sunrise – Luke 1:78, Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us
Stone – Acts 4:11, He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER

STONE

Stone of Stumbling – Romans 9:33, just as it is written, “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.”

Teacher – Matthew 8:19, Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”

The Way – John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

True God – 1 John 5:20, And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

True Vine – John 15:1, I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

Truth – John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Wisdom – 1 Corinthians 1:30, But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.

Wisdom of God – 1 Corinthians 1:24, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Wonderful Counselor – Isaiah 9:6, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Word – John 1:14, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Word of God – Revelation 19:13He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

Word of Life – 1 John 1:1-2, What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life 2 and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us

There are even more descriptive terms in the Bible that refer to Jesus. All of His names and titles are a dual revelation to us, as Warren Wiersbe explained in The Names of Jesus by saying, “The names and titles reveal what Jesus is in Himself, as well as what He wants to do for us. Each name that He bears indicates some blessing that He shares, and we can appropriate these blessings by faith.”
